There are a few people who enter our lives and quietly transform them forever. They do not merely teach a subject; they shape our thinking, nurture our dreams, and inspire us to become better human beings. For me, Dr. V. K. Lal Sir was one such extraordinary soul. He was not just my teacher or senior colleague; he was my mentor, my guide, my father figure, and above all, my Guru. I first met Dr. V. K. Lal Sir during my M.Pharm. in Pharmacognosy at Saroj Institute, where he came as the external examiner for our viva voce. Like every postgraduate student, I was nervous. An external examiner usually meant difficult questions and immense pressure. However, the moment Sir started interacting with us, all my fear disappeared. He asked questions, but he never made us feel uncomfortable or inferior. If we struggled to answer, he would gently guide us towards the correct response. His intention was never to test our memory alone; rather, he wanted us to understand the subject. That very first meeting taught me an unforgettable lesson—that true scholars carry knowledge with humility. They never use knowledge to intimidate others; they use it to enlighten them. From that day onward, every opportunity to meet Sir became a learning experience. Whether it was at seminars, conferences, workshops, or academic discussions, every interaction deepened my admiration for him. His simplicity, kindness, patience, and extraordinary depth of knowledge made him truly unique. The more I knew him, the more I realized that greatness and humility can beautifully coexist. Towards the completion of my master’s degree, I had another opportunity to interact with him closely. Since I had carried out my research project at the National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI), Sir discussed my work in detail and offered invaluable guidance. Those discussions completely changed my perspective towards Pharmacognosy. Looking back today, I can confidently say that my love and passion for Pharmacognosy grew because of him. He did not simply teach the subject—he made us fall in love with it. Later, I had the honour of working under his guidance as a Lecturer at Barabanki College. Those years remain among the most precious memories of my academic life. Whenever I had a free lecture, I would go and sit with Sir. Every conversation with him became a lesson beyond textbooks. His room was not merely an office; it was a place where knowledge flowed endlessly. He possessed an ocean of wisdom, and he shared it with remarkable generosity. One of the greatest privileges of my life was accompanying Sir on research and field visits for medicinal plant collection and formulation work. As age caught up with him, he would often smile and say, “Vijeta, I will sit here. You bring the plants, and I will tell you about them.” We would collect plants that we ourselves could barely identify, yet Sir would immediately tell us their botanical names, families, common names, important chemical constituents, medicinal uses, and countless other details without referring to any book. Even today, I wonder how one human mind could hold such an extraordinary treasure of knowledge. Watching him identify plants so effortlessly was nothing short of magical. Whenever any research project or field work was planned, Sir would often recommend my name. That trust he placed in me gave me confidence to grow as a researcher. Every opportunity he gave me became another milestone in my academic journey. Sir’s brilliance extended far beyond teaching and research. As a distinguished scientist, he made an extraordinary contribution to the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India (API). Every illustration reflected exceptional scientific accuracy, artistic excellence, and his profound understanding of medicinal plants. His work continues to educate and inspire generations of researchers and teachers. Among my most treasured possessions is one such original sketch that Sir personally gifted to me. I have preserved it with immense care over the years. To many, it may simply appear to be a scientific drawing, but to me it is a priceless blessing from my Guru. Every time I look at it, I remember his affection, his simplicity, and his extraordinary dedication to science and education. Whenever I faced academic challenges, research problems, or moments of confusion, Sir was always my first source of guidance. He had a remarkable ability to simplify even the most complex scientific concepts. During my Ph.D., his guidance became one of my greatest strengths. Whenever I explained concepts to my examiners exactly as Sir had taught me, they were so clear and comprehensive that very few questions remained to be asked. That was the magic of his teaching—he never encouraged rote learning; he nurtured true understanding. My relationship with Sir extended far beyond academics. During the COVID-19 pandemic, while I was pregnant, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. It was a difficult and emotionally challenging phase of my life. I shared my concerns with Sir. Drawing upon his vast knowledge of medicinal plants, he thoughtfully prepared an herbal tea for me. Alongside my regular medical care and monitoring, his guidance gave me immense confidence and hope during that difficult period. That incident reflected not only his scientific wisdom but also the genuine affection and concern he had for every student. He never stopped caring for those whose lives he had touched. Even after I moved to Ghaziabad to continue my professional journey, our bond never weakened. Whenever I needed guidance, encouragement, or someone to discuss academics with, Sir was always there. Distance never diminished our relationship because true mentorship knows no boundaries. One sentence of Sir is forever engraved in my heart. He would often smile and say, “Vijeta, this brain holds an ocean of knowledge. Before I leave this world, take as much as you can from it. Learn everything possible, use that knowledge, and dedicate it to the service and welfare of others.” At that time, I never imagined how precious those words would become. Today, I realize that this was not merely advice—it was the philosophy by which Sir lived. He believed that knowledge should never remain confined to books or to one individual. It should be shared selflessly and used for the betterment of society. Today, when I look back at my own journey, I realize that whatever I have achieved in my academic and professional life has been possible because of the foundation laid by Dr. V. K. Lal Sir. The knowledge I possess, the way I teach my students, the confidence with which I conduct research, and the values I carry as a teacher have all been shaped by him. Whatever I am today is because of my Guru. The passing of Dr. V. K. Lal Sir is not merely the loss of a distinguished scientist or an eminent academician. It is the loss of an institution in himself. The field of Pharmacognosy and Ayurvedic sciences has lost one of its brightest minds. His students have lost their teacher, his colleagues have lost their guide, and many of us have lost someone who was like family. Some people are remembered for the degrees they earn. Some are remembered for the positions they hold. But a rare few are remembered because they transform lives. Dr. V. K. Lal Sir belongs to that rare category. His legacy lives not only in his research, publications, and scientific illustrations, but also in the hearts of the countless students whose lives he illuminated. I consider myself among the luckiest people to have learnt from him, worked with him, travelled with him, and received his affection and blessings. These memories are among the greatest treasures of my life. If God blesses me with another life, I have only one prayer—that once again I may have the privilege of being Dr. V. K. Lal Sir’s student. I wish to learn from him again, to walk beside him in the forests collecting medicinal plants, to listen to his endless ocean of knowledge, and to proudly call him my mentor, my guide, and my Guru. Whatever I am today is because of Dr. V. K. Lal Sir. My knowledge is a reflection of his teachings, my confidence is a reflection of his faith in me, and my journey is a continuation of the path he showed me. My humble pranam to my beloved Guru. Thank you, Sir, for believing in me, guiding me, inspiring me, and shaping the person I am today. Your teachings will continue to live through every student whose life you touched. May your noble soul rest in eternal peace. Om Shanti. .

One of Dr. V. K. Lal’s childhood friends, Muni Dev Tyagi, former Workshop Superintendent, IIT-BHU, fondly remembers him with great respect and affection. He always regarded Dr. Lal not only as a childhood companion but also as an elder brother, mentor, and a sincere well-wisher who was always ready to help others. During their early childhood years, both of them lived in the old Jodhpur Colony on the BHU campus. The colony was a unique residential community where quarters were provided not only to teachers and professors but also to the university's ministerial and technical staff. This created a closely connected social environment where families from different professional backgrounds lived together like one extended family. The greatest feature of Jodhpur Colony was the absence of any social or professional divide between teaching and non-teaching staff. Children grew up together, shared the same playgrounds, celebrated festivals together, and developed friendships beyond designations and positions. The atmosphere reflected the true spirit of a university community—where respect, cooperation, and human relationships were valued above hierarchy. The common playground became the centre of their childhood activities—whether it was playing cricket, flying kites, or spending carefree evenings together. These simple moments created bonds that continued throughout life. The same playground also became the place where the community celebrated Holika Dahan every year. Dr. Lal and his friends played an active role in organising the event—from collecting wood for the bonfire to arranging decorations and preparing for the traditional rituals. The Holika Puja was performed by Prof. Tripathi from the Department of Mathematics, reflecting the cultural atmosphere of that era. This tradition represents a unique aspect of the BHU academic community of those times, where scholars were not only experts in their respective subjects but were also deeply connected with cultural traditions and social responsibilities. Professors, technical staff, and other university employees shared a common cultural space, carrying a sense of belonging and mutual respect. During his Pre-University days, Dr. V. K. Lal had a close-knit group of five to six friends who shared the joys, struggles, and simple pleasures of student life together. Among them was Dr. Satyawan Singh, who later became a scientist at CSIR–Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI), Lucknow. Dr. Satyawan Singh fondly remembers those days filled with friendship, laughter, and meaningful conversations. The group of friends used to travel by bicycle to Kamachha College, Banaras. Those cycling journeys were not merely a way of commuting; they became cherished moments of companionship. On the way, they would discuss studies, future aspirations, daily experiences, and countless small things that brought happiness to their young lives. The return journey after college was equally memorable. The friends would cycle back together, enjoying each other’s company and the freedom of those simple days. Dr. Satyawan Singh would accompany Dr. Lal up to a point near the BHU campus, where they would part ways. From there, Dr. Lal would return to the university campus with his other friends. Looking back, these ordinary bicycle rides became extraordinary memories. They reflected the simplicity, warmth, and strong bonds of friendship that shaped Dr. Lal’s formative years. Those days of shared journeys, conversations, and dreams remained an important part of his life story. .

I was appointed as a Research Assistant in 1983 at the Department of Dravyaguna, Faculty of Ayurveda, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. It was one project out of the 9 projects conducted by the Central Council for Research in Ayurveda and Siddha—currently the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences, New Delhi. The project involved the pharmaceutical standardization of Ayurvedic formulations alongside single Ayurvedic medicines. To identify them, I remained in constant contact with Dr. V.K. Lal received full cooperation; in 1998, pursuant to a Government of India order, the various projects running at the universities and other organisations like CSIR ICMR etc. were consolidated and merged different CCRAS institute working all over the country. The drug standardization research project involved the standardization of single ayurvedic drugs and Ayurvedic formulations (compound preparations). This process entailed the identification and standardization of both individual Ayurvedic plants and the botanical ingredients used in these formulations an area where the Dr. Lal contribution cannot be overlooked. I received immense support by Director of CCRAS, New Delhi—Dr. Veluchami and Dr. V.K. Lal regarding my transfer from BHU Varanasi to Regional Research Institute in Lucknow. Dr. V.K. Lal played a pivotal role in the standardization of drug research project at the Lucknow institute, as well as in the preparation of monographs for single Ayurvedic drugs for the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India. Between 2003 and 2007, I had the opportunity to work twice at the New Delhi headquarters alongside Dr. V.K. Lal on the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India project, completing ten monographs. Dr. V.K. Lal was not only a capable administrator but also a pharmacognosist and an expert on medicinal plants used in Ayurvedic medicines. He was a person of genuine and simple nature. He will always be remembered for his distinct impression that left on officers and staff alike. His dedication to research and his ability to effectively explain the nuances of research work to fellow officers and staff are qualities rarely seen in officials. Despite holding a high-ranking position, he was a very kind and humble person.

It gives me immense pleasure to share a few memories of my younger brother, Vijay, whose inspiring journey has been beautifully captured in The Legend Behind Bikalp Herbals. During his school days, Vijay developed a deep interest in nature, particularly medicinal plants. Recognizing his aptitude for biology, I encouraged him to pursue science as his field of study. At Banaras Hindu University, he became a regular visitor to the Botanical and Medicinal Plant Garden of the Faculty of Ayurveda. His passion for medicinal plants was further nurtured by the teachings of the eminent scholars Prof. P. V. Sharma and Prof. K. C. Chunekar, both of whom served as In-charge of the Medicinal Plant Garden at different times and were also our respected neighbours in Jodhpur Colony on the BHU campus. Photography was another of Vijay's cherished interests. After my return from the United States, I gifted him a Yashica camera, and he later refined his skills at the Hobby Club of BHU. The camera documented his research on medicinal plants for his M.Pharm., Ph.D., and scientific publications, besides preserving treasured memories of family celebrations, tours, and gatherings with relatives and friends. It is a matter of immense pride that my niece, Stuti, has carried forward Vijay's vision through Bikalp Herbals. By documenting his life and mission in this book, she has preserved an inspiring legacy for future generations. I extend my heartfelt blessings and best wishes for the success of this book and pray that Bikalp Herbals continues to advance the timeless wisdom of Ayurveda for the benefit of society.

I still have the Ramayana he gifted me, with the handwritten couplets he added inside. It was such a thoughtful present. I didn’t know him very closely, but from what I saw, he was very mature and carried himself with dignity. In Germany they say that mature, learned people treat every word like currency. I feel proud that someone so learned, with such a remarkable personality, was part of our family circle 💐💐
